WordPress Security: 21 Years in the Trenches

Back in 1997, when Google was a project in a garage, I started out as an independent IT consultant. Since then, I’ve seen the web turn from a simple tool for sharing info into a digital battlefield. Most people know me as “the SEO guy” – or the man who keeps WordPress sites running, but I’ve learned a hard truth over the last quarter-century: regular maintenance doesn’t mean a thing if your site is under siege.

I’ve seen plenty of Kiwi small businesses get crippled in a matter of hours. These are good people with solid services who suddenly find themselves hit by “Post” bomb attacks or relentless traffic floods. I’ve personally spent 30-hour stretches working alongside hosting techs, implementing security rules while under fire to save a client’s livelihood from a nasty DDoS attack.

Why BotBlock exists

While there are enterprise-level tools out there, most small business owners simply don’t have the time or the technical background to set them up properly. They’re left wide open because they can’t afford to pay a large security firm $thousands every month.

BotBlock.nz is my way of addressing that gap. I’m taking 13 years of daily WordPress tech support and maintenance plus 25 years of SEO and hosting experience to provide a really effective defence for the “little guy.”

WordPress security is ultimately an SEO issue. If you get hacked and end up with malware or phishing content, your rankings and traffic will evaporate faster than a glass of Jim Beam in the hot summer sun. Back in the day, security was simple, mostly just stopping people from guessing passwords. Now? Not so much… It’s vicious and nasty, and a ransomware attack can wipe you out.

Prevention is always better than the alternative. If you’ve been hit, the priority is fixing the damage and securing the site immediately. You’re better off clearing out malicious code and putting up proper defences right away rather than wasting days trying to figure out exactly how they got in.

Having accumulated extensive experience in SEO, WordPress and website design/redesign, I was often asked to maintain additional client websites as the years rolled past. To formalise that demand, the www.WebsiteMaintenanceServices.co.nz website was activated when the domain was registered on 8th November 2013. I’ve been providing website maintenance services for 13 years.

Website Redesign Specialist

Web design services were offered via www.website-designers.net.nz by 2002. This morphed into www.Website-Redesign-Company.co on 9th July 2011 and was merged into www.WebsiteRedesign.nz on 24th May 2022. Website redesign services require a comprehensive set of special skills to avert the destruction of current SERP rankings. Such skills are hard-earned and not readily available and most SEO consultants lack hands-on WordPress expertise.

Site Hosting

I’ve been a provider of web hosting for 11 years through www.Hosting-SE-Asia.co which went live on 12 August 2012. This involves managed VPS servers using WHM / cPanel and/or Spanel for client websites. THis is something I’m easing out of, but I still have a Reseller Hosting account with Stablehost.
